Hervé Chemouli – lawyer, partner, co-founder and co-manager of Chemouli Professions Libérales in Paris – took over as President of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) on October 30 at the end of its hybrid congress in Madrid.

Established in 1927 against the background of the creation of the League of Nations, UIA represents nearly one million lawyers through its individual and collective members (bars, federations and associations) in more than 110 countries. Its purpose is to promote the core principles of the legal profession and the development of legal science in all areas of the law at international level.

Before becoming UIA President, Hervé Chemouli held institutional positions as a member of the Conseil de l'Ordre du Barreau de Paris (Paris Bar Council) (2000-2002) and the Conseil National des Barreaux (CNB) – French National Bar Council (2003-2005). Currently, he is an expert for the CNB's Commission du Statut Professionnel de l'Avocat (SPA) or Commission on the Professional Status of Lawyers. Within UIA, he has successively held the posts of Commission President, Financial Director, Congress Director and Vice-President.

His work at the international level in the Maghreb region, particularly in Morocco, as well as in all the countries of the Latin American region, has enabled him to build strong relationships abroad, particularly with numerous international law firms.Drawing on his experience, Hervé Chemouli would like to strengthen multiculturalism within the association, "known for its ability to bring together the two systems of continental and common law", during his tenure as UIA president.

He will also set up a Think Tank dedicated to the efficiency and relevance of our judicial systems. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship that the legal profession has with the judiciary and on the professional secrecy at international level. The culmination of these reflections will be presented at the next congress of the association, which will devote an entire theme to this issue. The congress will be held from October 26-30, 2022, in Dakar, Senegal.
